My Goals for Teaching ELL students
Develop their social and academic communicative competence so they will have the ability to use the language that is appropriate for the situations
Achieve the expected learning outcomes of the provincial curriculum
Develop their individual potential
Acquire the language proficiency, skills, and attitudes needed to contribute positively to society
My Use of Language
I will advocate for and provide assistance in working toward equitable access for the learner
I will provide additional “wait time” for student responses to questions
I will be conscious of the vocabulary that I use
I will simplify sentence structure.
I will rephrase idiom or teach their meaning
I will clearly mark transitions during classroom activities
I will periodically check to ensure ESL students are understanding
My Support for Linguistic Development
I will write key words on the board and use visuals and other non-verbal cues to present key ideas
I will provide written notes, summaries, and instructions
I will use the students’ native languages to check comprehension and clarify problems
I will communicate interest in students’ linguistic development and set expectations
I will respond to students’ language errors
I will use directed reading activities
I will establish a supportive environment for language learning
I will use co-operative learning strategies
I will encourage students to rehearse information or instructions orally
I will use peer tutoring
I will establish homework club
